Red-eared Slider Trachemys scripta elegans

This one was seen basking at the edge of a pond in Singapore Botanic Gardens

Status: Introduced

Interesting Facts: The Red-eared Slider needs no introduction. It is commonly sold in pet shops in Singapore. Juveniles look cute. However, once matured, tired-owners release them into the wild. These days you are likely to encounter these introduced terrapins instead of our native species in the wild.

Size: 28cm

Diet: Omnivorous.

Our Native Terrapins: Malayan Box Terrapin, Spiny Hill Terrapin

Activity: Diurnal and amphibious (more aquatic).

Habitat: Canals, ponds, reservoirs in forest
