Roadkill
found along Mandai Road near Bukit Timah Expressway, 11 June 2001

The
same cat preserved at RMBR.
|
Status:
Endangered
Interesting
Facts: It was thought that the leopard cat was extinct in
Singapore. The last confirmed sighting was from Mandai in 1968.
No record of its presence for the past twenty years until recently
in June 2001, a roadkill was found along Mandai road. Perhaps
there is still hopes that a small population still roams in
our limited native jungles. Despite this, the leopard cat is
still at the brink of extinction.
Size:
17-26cm
Diet:
Feeds on vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, birds and small
mammals.
Activity:
Hunt by night.
Habitat:
Forest habitats, probably restricted to Central Catchment Area
and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.
Threats:
Habitat destruction. Shrinking tropical forest becomes a threat
since carnivores require much larger areas for hunting down
their prey.
