Pangolin

Interesting
Facts: The pangolin is covered all over the body with overlapping
horny scales. It is toothless, feeds on ants and termites with
its long sticky tongue. Has strong fore feet and claws to dig
out insects. It can climb well, making use of its muscular prehensile
tail. Normally, produces one young a year. The young is carried
on the back of its mother just above the base of the tail. When
attacked, the mother will tucks the young in her abdomen and
coils into a ball. It has an anal gland with a foul smelling
secretion that is use for defence as well as mating.
Size:
79-88cm
Diet:
Mainly ants and termites. Studies have shown that a pangolin's
stomach can weigh 125g, and estimated to comprise over 200,00
ant workers and pupae.
Activity:
Nocturnal, largely terrestrial although able to climb trees.

Habitat:
Primary forest but can also be found in rubber estates, orchards.
Distributed mainly in the Central catchment Area and Bukit Timah
Nature Reserve.
Threats:
Habitat destruction. In the old days, its meat is very much
sought after by the Chinese.
