Chinese Soft-shell Turtle Pelodiscus sinensis

Photographs by K W Chan in Singapore Botanics Garden.

Interesting Facts: This is one softshell turtle that once used to be commonly sold in pets shops here. Chinese soft-shell turtles like our native soft-shell turtles, are carnivorous, they prefer fish, crustaceans and molusks. When irresponsible pets owner release these "aliens" into our waters, these turtles can cause serious harm to the ecosystem here. They compete for food with our native turtles and their carnivorous nature definitely has some impacts on the aquatic life here.
